Baghdatis Snaps Losing Streak
Marcos Baghdatis snapped a four-match losing streak at the Farmer’s Classic in Los Angeles yesterday with a 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 win over American Ryan Sweeting. “It’s been a long time,” Baghdatis said afterwards of his first win since the French Open. “I didn’t win a match on grass. It’s been two months I didn’t win a match. It’s a long time. It feels good winning a match, even without playing good. The positive attitude is there which is very important, and I’m looking forward to the next one.”
South African Kevin Anderson was also in action yesterday, and missed an incredible opportunity to score a victory over Sam Querrey. Anderson lost the first set 7-6 but won the second 6-4. However, after doing all the hard work of battling back into the match, he fell apart in the decider, losing 6-0.
At the clay court event in Umag, the seeds enjoyed a very good day. Nikolay Davydenko, Alexandr Dolgopolov, Juan Ignacio Chela and Juan Carlos Ferrero all advanced to the quarter-finals. In Gstaad, Richard Gasquet showed some heart in a 6-7, 6-3, 6-0 win over Daniel Brands, while Albert Montanes also fought back from a set down to finally triumph 3-6, 6-1, 6-0.
