Golubev, Fish Clinch Titles
Mardy Fish won his second title in as many tournaments in Atlanta yesterday when he beat fellow American John Isner, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6. "This is as top as I’ve ever been," Fish said after his win. "I’ve never won two tournaments in one year, I’ve never won two tournaments in a row, and on the ATP Tour, I’ve never won 10 matches in a row. It’s probably as good as it’s been." He was complementary of his opponent, who has now lost three out of his last four finals. "It was a little lucky to pull through," he said. "Today was an extremely physical match just with the heat. He’s no fun to play, that’s for sure. He gives a lot of people a lot of trouble."
In Hamburg, Andrey Golubev closed out a nightmare week for the top players participating in the tournament by upsetting third seed Jurgen Melzer 6-3, 7-5. “I’m very happy to win my first title, especially here in Hamburg on a clay-court. I never expected that my first title would be on clay," an relieved and elated Golubev said after the match. "I played very well, I believed in myself. It was very tough [today]. I served well. I played very well from the baseline. In the important points I played very good. I think the most important thing this week was that I believed in myself, I believed in my game, my forehand and backhand.”
