Tennis News Fish Stuns Roddick in Atlanta

Mardy Fish upset his good friend and countryman Andy Roddick in Atlanta on Saturday, recording his first victory over the American number one in ten attempts. The 7-6, 6-3 win came with Fish serving at only 40%, but despite this statistic he still served nine aces (one more than Roddick) and saved all three break points he faced. "It´s one of the best wins I’ve had,” a delighted Fish said. “It´s tough to beat a great friend. He said to me at the net: ‘I know how hard you’ve worked, so enjoy it. I’ve put away a lot of things I enjoy."

Fish will face another American, John Isner, in Sunday’s final, after the big server beat South African Kevin Anderson 6-3, 6-7, 6-3. “The conditions were just brutal," Isner said. "It took a lot out of me. But thankfully then the cloud came across [during the second set]. Honestly, the temperature dropped so much. Without clouds the sun was just beaming down. I felt the court temperature dropped significantly and made it a lot easier to play.”

In Hamburg the final will be contested between Jurgen Melzer and Andrey Golubev. Melzer easily overcame an exhausted Italian Andreas Seppi – who had battled for over three hours to dispatch of Thomaz Bellucci a day earlier – in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2. Golubev also didn’t have much trouble in seeing off the tournament’s last local hope Florian Mayer, beating the German 7-6, 6-4.
