Tennis News Davydenko Prevails as Seeds Tumble in Hamburg

It was a day of upsets at the ATP World Tour 500 event in Hamburg, with no fewer than three seeds tumbling out of the tournament. Tommy Robredo’s run of poor form continued when he lost to Italy’s Potito Starace, 6-7, 7-5, 1-6. Gilles Simon also struggled to find his feet against Jarko Nieminen, losing to the Fin in three tight sets, and Aleksandr Dolgopolov Jr. fell to florian Mayer, 4-6, 7-6, 6-3. Nikolay Davydenko steadied the ship, however, by soundly beating Florent Serra 6-3, 6-1. The Russian is the tournament’s top seed, and is looking for his first title since returning from a broken wrist that kept him sidelined for two months.

Over in Atlanta it was a mixed day for Americans taking part in the local 250 event. Ryan Sweeting was ousted by Xavier Malisse 7-6, 6-3, and James Blake was defeated by countryman Taylor Dent 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. Robbie Ginepri recorded a good win over Nick Lindahl in straight sets, and Donald Young crushed Dudi Sela 7-5, 6-0. South African Kevin Anderson upset Janko Tipsarevic 6-3, 7-5, and will go on to play Young for a place in the quarter-finals.
