Soderling, Ferrer Through in Bastad
Top seed and defending champion Robin Soderling struggled in his second-round match in Bastad on Wednesday, needing three sets to overcome countryman Andreas Vinciguerra 6-2, 6-7(6), 6-2. Soderling squandered a match point in the second set tie-break but came back strong in the third to seal victory and move on to the quarter-finals.
Spaniard David Ferrer added to his tour-leading number of clay court wins this season (30 and counting) by beating Fabio Fognini 6-3, 7-5. Currently at number 12 in the rankings, Ferrer is determined to make his way back to the Top 10, and a win in Bastad this week will definitely help his cause.
Over in Stuttgart, seventh seed Gilles Simon lost to local hope Simone Greul 6-4, 7-5. Albert Montanes and Jurgen Melzer were the only other seeds left in action on Wednesday, and both made their way safely through to the quarter-finals with wins over Juan Ignacio Chela and Mischa Zverev respectively.
