Fish Wins Tough Newport Final
Mardy Fish won his first ever grass court title yesterday by beating Olivier Rochus 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 in the final of the Hall of Fame Championships. Fish also reached the final round of the Queen’s Club Championships in June, where he narrowly lost to fellow American Sam Querrey. “It means a lot to win now on every surface in my career – indoor, outdoor, hard, clay and grass,” Fish said after the win. “I’ve certainly lost a lot of heartbreak finals, and it feels good to win one.”
Rochus was disappointed by the loss, but praised Fish for his composure and clutch serving throughout. “I was feeling really good on the court,” he said. “It was just one or two points. The last two games were so close. I had two break points [at 4-5], game points at 4-all. It’s just like this. When it’s that tight, one has to win. But Mardy was pushing hard at the end and his serve was really good, so maybe he deserved it a little more.”
Fish will now return to the Top 50 for the first time this year. He was one a perennial presence in the Top 30, but a string of injuries has seen his ranking vary wildly in the last couple of years.
