Dream Runs End for Brown, Klaasen
After providing plenty of surprises in the opening days of the Hall of Fame Championships in Newport, Raven Klaasen and Dustin Brown were finally knocked out on Thursday. Klaasen fell to the experienced Belgian Olivier Rochus, whose wily tactics and quick foot speed proved too much for the South African qualifier. The 6-1, 6-3 scoreline is a fair reflection of the match, which was never close and saw Rochus assume control from the very start of the third set.
Brown lost to little-known Argentine Brian Dabul, who has yet to reach a Tour-level final in his nine-year career. At 5.7” he is one of the shorter players on the circuit, but his lack of height didn’t matter on Thursday as he easily neutralised the Jamaican’s huge serve and wide array of trick shots. Mardy Fish is the highest ranked player left in the draw, and he will fancy his chances against a field that has few credentials at this level.
