Surprises Continue in Newport
Dustin Brown delivered the biggest surprise of the Hall of Fame Championships in Newport yesterday when he defeated top seed Sam Querrey 6-4, 6-3. The Jamaican was on fire with his serve, delivering 14 aces and losing only one point on his first serve the whole match. Brown was delighted by the result, though he didn’t expect it. “When I saw the draw in the beginning, I was like Bjorn [Phau] – he’s a tough guy to play – and Querrey, that’s not the draw I wanted,” he said after his win. “Now I won, now it’s okay. But before, he’s a great player. He did unbelievable in Queen’s, saw him there and saw him play against all those guys. It’s going to take a little bit to sink in probably.”
Another major surprise was South African Raven Klaasen’s win over defending champion Rajeev Ram. The men split the first two sets, but in the third Ram raced ahead to a 5-0 lead. It seemed like a mere formality for Ram to serve out the match, but Klaasen refused to go down without a fight and the stunned American could only stand and watch as his lead evaporated. Stretched to a tie-break, he couldn’t hold on and Klaasen snuck through to the quarter-finals. He will next face Olivier Rochus, who had an easy straight set win over a qualifier.
