Marathon Man Mahut Returns at Newport
Frenchman Nicolas Mahut made his first appearance at a tournament yesterday since his record-breaking marathon match at Wimbledon. Playing at the Newport grass court championships he recorded a win over Columbian Alejandro Falla, the man who nearly beat Roger Federer at the All England Club two weeks ago. The contest went the distance, with Mahut finally triumphing 6-3, 1-6, 6-3.
Top seed Sam Querrey also made smooth progress into the second round with a victory over Jesse Levine, 6-3, 6-3. Another man who bothered Roger Federer at Wimbledon last week, Ilija Bozoljac, was knocked out by South African Raven Klaasen in two tie-breaks. The quirky Serbian, who served up a storm against Federer, struggled with his delivery on Tuesday and committed 15 double faults. Klaasen will next face Rajeev Ram, the big-serving American who beat Ivan Navarro in straight sets.
