Brown Through in Newport, Dent falls
Jamaican Dustin Brown squandered a host of match points in the Hall of Fame Championships in Newport yesterday, before finally prevailing over Bjorn Phau 7-6, 6-7, 6-4. Brown is one of the Tour’s rising stars, and is quickly making a name for himself on the men’s circuit. “It was really close today,” he said after the tense match. “It could’ve gone either way. I’m happy I was on the winning end though. Just happy that I got through it. Hopefully I’ll serve better in that next match because in the beginning I had a little problem trying to find my serve.”
Past champion and eight seed Taylor Dent wasn’t so lucky, however, and fell to little-known Go Soeda, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4. There was good news for South African tennis in the American event, as local favourite Raven Klaasen won his final match in the qualifying rounds. Unfortunately he had to defeat fellow South African Izak van der Merwe to secure his place in the main draw. The final score was 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.
