Nadal Reclaims Wimbledon Title
Rafael Nadal concluded the belated defence of his Wimbledon crown by defeating Tomas Berdych in straight sets in yesterday’s final, 6-3, 7-5, 6-4. It is the Mallorcan’s eighth Grand Slam title and his second victory at the All England Club. It wasn’t quite the competitive affair many people were hoping for, and both men played poorly by their high standards. Unforced errors determined the winner in the end, and Nadal managed to keep the ball in play more regularly that the Czech, who was contesting his first Major final.
“It’s more than a dream for me,” Nadal afterwards. “It was always my dream to play on this court and today, to play a fourth final for me was amazing. I couldn’t be here last year but this year I came back and to have this trophy in my hands is more than a dream.”
Berdych was disappointed with his performance, but gave Nadal credit for grinding out a victory in tough conditions. “It was a great two weeks for me, but he was very strong today,” he said. “He’s showed in the last few months that he’s really the champion and he just deserved to win today.”
