Seeds Continue to Fall in Warmup Events
It hasn’t been a good two weeks for top players looking to sharpen their grass court games for Wimbledon. Last week, Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray, Novak Djokovic and Nikolay Davydenko all failed to make the semi-finals of the Queen’s Club and Halle events, and things haven’t been going much better at Eastbourne and ‘s-Hertogenbosch. Top seed Nicolas Almagro retired with an injury against Denis Istomin, while Victor Troicki, Tommy Robredo and Marcos Baghdatis were all unceremoniously knocked out.
It is perhaps an ill omen for those players that the Wimbledon seed list was released today as well. Roger Federer claimed the top spot, followed by Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray and Andy Roddick. The seeding for Wimbledon doesn’t follow the ATP rankings, as is the case at other Slams. Instead, a special formula is used that takes a player’s performance on grass into special consideration.
