Schiavone, Stosur to Meet in Unlikely Final
The Italian was the first to reach the Championship round when her final against Elena Dementieva was cut short due to injury. It was a cruel blow to Dementieva, who has never won a Slam despite being an ever-present threat at the top of womens tennis for a number of years. "Itīs very painful to even walk," Dementieva said after the match. "I got it after my second match and aggravated it here. Every morning when I woke up it was painful to make a first step, but I really wanted to play because itīs a very special tournament for me. I was pushing myself very hard to get through the pain. It was a bit too much. I couldnīt really move. I was trying to fight it because it is a very special moment for everyone, and also for myself.
The other semi-final took almost as much time as the first one, but not because of an injury. Sam Stosur absolutely crushed former world number one Jelena Jankovic, who was also looking for her first Slam title. The final score was 6-1, 6-2, and Jankovic never stood a chance against the powerful Aussie.
